WESTBURY-ON-SEVERN
is an extensive
parish and large village, comprising the tithings of ADSETT, BOLLOW, BOSELEY, CHAXHILL, CLEEVE,
ELTON, LEY, NORTHWOOD, STANTWAY;
RODLEY and WESTBURY. The
manor of Rodley, comprising the tithings of Adsett, Chaxhill, Bollow, Cleeve,
Stantway, Elton and Rodley is situated in the hundred of the Duchy of
Lancaster, and the tithing of Northwood in the hundred of St. Briavels. Westbury-is-Severn is 3 miles
north-east from Newnham, 9 south-west from Gloucester, 1½ south-west
from Grange Court station, on the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester and South Wales
railway, and 116 from London, in Newnham Counry court district, deanery of
North Forest, Gloucester archdeaconry and Gloucester and Bristol diocese.
The
river Severn forms the boundary of the parish on the south-east, extending from
Denny Bridge to Broad Oak, a distance of 8 miles. The church of the Virgin Mary, consisting of chancel, nave
and aisles, with a detached tower surmounted by a spire, is an old stone
building, faced in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles: the whole church has
been thoroughly restored at a cost of upwards of £3,000; and an organ placed in
an organ chamber on the south side: in 1878 a handsomes erected, and the floor
of the chancel laid with encaustic tiles:
there are five stained memorial windows: the chancel contains five
marble monuments to the Colchester family, three to the Boughton family, and
five others; also a brass, dated 1642.
The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £292, in the gift of
the Custos and Vicars Choral in the cathedral church of Hereford, and held by
the Rev. Christopher Jay Jones, M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, who is also
rural dean of the northern division of the Forest of Dean. There are Congregational and Wesleyan
chapels. The charities and
endowments are of £36 yearly value.
Here
are very peculiar gardens, called Court Gardens, which belong to the Colchester
family, and originally there was a court house here; they are in the Dutch
style, and were laid out in the reign of William and Mary; there is a beautiful
summerhouse, and some remains of other buildings exist; these are supposed to
be a specimen of the best Dutch gardens.
In
the neighbourhood is Garden Cliff, celebrated for its fossil remains; it is a
favourite resort of geologists.
