STONE is a township, village and chapelry in the parish of Berkeley, 4 miles south-west from Berkeley Road station on the Bristol and Birmingham railway, 5 north-east from Thornbury, 7 south-west from Dursley and 16 north from Bristol, in the Western division of the county, Berkeley hundred, Thornbury union, Dursley county court district, Dursley Rural deanery, Gloucester archdeaconry, and Gloucester and Bristol diocese, situated on the high road from Gloucester to Bristol, and on the Little River Avon.

The church of All Saints was built about 1460: it is in the Decorated style, and the chancel was thoroughly repaired about 1865: it has chancel, nave, north aisle, porch, a square tower with spire and 5 bells, and contains an organ. The register dates from the year 1595. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £85, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Berkeley, and held by the Rev. Charles Cripps,M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There are charities of £30 yearly value.

Lord Fitzhardinge, who is lord of the manor, the Rev Sir Edward Harry Vaughan Colt, bart. Thomas Breadstone Croome, esq. the representatives of the late Rev. Ralph Hopper, and Mr Robert Stephen, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey and loamy; subsoil, marl.

The land is principally pasturage; the area is 650 acres; rateable value of Stone (without Ham), £1,947 ; the population in 1871 was 260
