DYMOCK or DIMOCK, is a parish and straggling village, 4
miles north-north-west from Newent, 4 south-south-east from Ledbury and 12
north-west from Gloucester, in the Western division of the county, Botloe
hundred, Newent union and county court district, deanery of North Forest,
archdeaconry of Gloucester and diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, situated on
the turnpike road leading from Gloucester and Newent to Ledbury, Ross and
Hereford, which intersects the parish, as does also the canal leading from Gloucester
and Hereford.
The
church of St. Mary consists of a chancel and large nave, with a transept
unequal in height; one of the windows on the south side is in the Early Norman
style; modern alterations have effaced many marks of antiquity; the oak spire is
supported by a massive tower of stone containing a peal of 6 bells; an image of
the patron saint formerly stood in a recess of the north transept: the church
has been partially restored after plans prepared by J Middleton esq. The register, in a very perfect state,
dates from the year 1538. The
living is a vicarage, yearly value £104, in the gift of Earl Beauchamp and held
by the Hon. And Rev. Alfred Francis Algernon Hanbury-Tracey, M.A. of Christ
Church, Oxford.
At
Bromsberrow Heath is a school chapel, a modern stone structure, the chancel of
which has three small stained windows.
The Bible ChristiansÕ sect have a chapel at BroomÕs Green. There are charities connected with this
parish amounting to £30 yearly.
The
celebrated John Kyrle, the ÒMan of Ross,Ó was born at the White House, in this
parish.
On
the south side of this parish, near the high road, is an elevation called
Castle Tump, which is evidently artificial, and is variously reported to have
been thrown up by Cromwell in the time of the civil war, as a place of
observation, to have been of Roman origin, or the site of a castle erected by
one of the Earls of Hereford.
Old
Grange, the seat of Reginald Wynniatt, esq. J.P. formerly belonged to the Abbey
of Flazley, at the dissolution of which it was granted to Sir Anthony Kingston,
bart. From whom it descended to the Wynniatt family. Wilton Place and Hill Ash, the residences of John Cam
Thackwell, esq. D.L. and Major Raikes, J.P. are pleasantly situated here. Boyce Court, the residence of George
Onslow Deane, esq. J.P. is situated in this parish; the ceiling of the
dining-room bears date 1634.
Earl
Beauchamp and Reginald Wynniatt, esq. D.L. are lords of the manor and John Cam
Thackwell, and Reginald Wynniatt, esqs. are the chief landowners. The soil is of a sandy nature in some
places, but is generally loam, and is applied to pasture, arable and wood land;
a fair proportion of wheat, barley and peas are grown here, and the parish is famous for the breed of small
Ryeland sheep. Apple and pear
trees are planted in the open grounds and the elm and oak grow in great
luxuriance.
The
area is 6,743 acres; rateable value, £11,162; and the population in 1871 was
1,778.
