Are there any Forest of Dean links, to your knowledge?

I see on Genesreunited - the marriage of Arthur James PARNELL and Alice Elizabeth PHILLIPS has not been found- do you have any approximate ages of this couple, i.e. from death records etc.

A daughter is listed as Florence Elizabeth PARNELL - born 1913 - Pentwynmaur, WALES

Pls Help Decipher Enumerator's Notes on Census Form

While searching the 1911 England & Wales Census last weekend I was particularly keen to look up an ancestor living in Longhope who's birthplace has long baffled me, as the previous Census's etc have given his Birthplace as "NK...Not Known". I've searched many different avenues for his birth, indeed I've identified a possible family in the Stroud area, but no hard evidence at all.
So imagine my delight when I find he was actually born in Oxfordshire, not unlikely and so a new lead to follow.
HOWEVER when I actually see the Census Form this now appears doubtful, but I'd be interested to know what you wiser people think, please ?.

When completing the form my ancestor has neatly & carefully used a pleasant clear Victorian hand in black ink, he has clearly left the "Place of birth" box empty.
However within this box(albeit it only just towards the far right end) someone has written "OX" in red ink. Immediately below this, and right next to the word Gloucester relating to my ancestor's wife, is written "137" or "13r" in the same ink & hand. To me this looks like a completely different hand & scribe altogether.

I presume this is the mark of an enumerator or somesuch official, and probably has NO relevance at all to the birthplace of my ancestor. If it did mean "Oxfordshire" as the website transcriber believes, wouldn't they have writen "Ox" ? Or do these characters perhaps indeed relate to a Birth Record or page of a Register ?

I hope someone with more Census Form experience and wisdom than me can please share their thoughts on this matter, thankyou, Jeff.

1911 CENSUS (reply)

Thanks Anne for your helpful reply, particularly your views re the various subscription sites. The only reason I've leaned towards Ancestry is the free access available at the local Libraries, albeit limited, plus as you say they do seem to have the greatest records. You are quite correct wrt the FOD etc transcribers using their local knowledge to help ensure accuracy, which is great, but what does get my goat is the ability of Ancestry in my limited experience to get the simplest record so wrong. The number of Marry's instead of Harry's I've found are an obvious example. Last week I was excited to find an ancestor who had been a "ship steward", great I thought (I'm an engineer). However the 1911 Census form in question showed this person to be living with a Farmer, in rural Longhope. Yes the Form clearly read "Shepherd" !!.

Further to my post of last week I have today found the following article from 2006 within the website of a wellknown British PRs company, which gives some credence to my thoughts:

"??? Genealogy Supplies’ online genealogy data service has taken off, and they are striving to make their indexes as accurate as possible, largely helped by the UKIndexer project www.ukindexer.co.uk. This is part of a vigorous, many layered, checking system to ensure a high degree of accuracy.

Transcripts and indexes
Although they started out with a volunteer surname indexing project, the census pieces are now fully transcribed in India with good results. The transcription stage is followed by an initial check to sample the data, which is then rejected if the error rate is unacceptable.

The data is then examined by a series of sophisticated, custom written software programs which look for anomalies. Initially these look at names and their frequency, flagging unusual looking entries. The flagged entries are checked and corrected by the ??? Genealogy Supplies trained in-house indexing team and the end result is used to create the name indexes. These are released in advance of the full transcripts, which still have a considerable amount of work to be done.

Further customised software examines the fully transcribed data, which contains all the major fields including the occupation. This software looks at details such as place names, relationships and occupations, again flagging any entries that look dubious. These are then checked by their in-house team assisted by over 4,000 volunteer indexers who have signed up to help at www.ukindexer.co.uk."
http://www.genealogyreviews.co.uk/ftmMar06uki.htm

Please note I am not promoting this company in any way, however it strikes me that their multilayered process is rather more effective than the system Ancestry use, which I'm sure is similar wrt their using staff from countries who do not fully recognise or understand British names and their context.

With regard my previously posted guess that the transcriptions would be initially done by machine, I mentioned this issue to my longsuffering wife. She is an accountant, she tells me in the last few weeks she's had to contact banks who are incorrectly removing extra £000s from her company's account. It transpires my wife has a new clerk who writes cheques very neatly & clearly; however her "1"s have long leading strokes which make the automated readers think they're "4"s !, rather like the Victorian "H"s and "W"s which Ancestry often think are "M"s.

Phillips of Pentwynmawr, Abercarn, South Wales (reply)

Hi Andrew,
welcome to this great site from across the water. I see you're in Weston Super Mud as I'm afraid we used to affectionately call it on our regular family day trips. Nowhere else could the phrase "lets go for a quick paddle" instill such leg-fatigue into small kids ! ;-), the tide being invariably out "for lunch" by the time we'd arrived from the Forest.
First may I remind you what I'm sure you know, that Abercarn is someway outside of the Forest of Dean area so is not within this site's remit or PR database.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?About_the_Forest

Abercarn is within this Parish
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/Mynyddyslwyn/#Description

Clearly the Forest does have traditional links with the South Wales valleys and it's iron & coal industries so I have had a quick search for the Marriage via FreeBMD, have you tried this excellent free site, if not I strongly recommend it. I believe it has decent coverage of the South Wales area where I expected to find your Marriage, however that said the nearest I've found thusfar is:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1890 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parnell John Doncaster 9c 726
PHILLIPS Alice Sheffield 9c 726
Spencer Mary Elizabeth Sheffield 9c 726
Taylor Mary Frances Sheffield 9c 726
TURTON Thomas Sheffield 9c 726
WIGLEY Henry Sheffield 9c 726

HOWEVER please search FreeBMD yourself in case this isn't our couple, don't be too over specific wrt first names and do try variations of spelling.

Does the Sheffield area tie in with your family, your query wasn't overly specific so I assumed I was looking for South Wales or Somerset PRs ?. If you can provide more background to the couple then we may be able to help you more too.

Of course the Abercarn area had an ironworks which is a clear link to Sheffield, although I suppose it is more likely to be remembered for it's coal mining history following the terrible disaster of 1878.
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1539643

http://industrialgwent.co.uk/newbridge.htm

http://www.newbridge-online.info/collieries.html

http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Ebbw_Vale_Steelworks

Regarding the above FreeBMD result, I tried searching for Births for the couple, there a re a LOT of Alice Elizabeth Phillips listed but I only find three Arthurs:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1858 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parnell Arthur James Portsea 2b 326

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1883 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PARNELL Arthur James Thornbury 6a 218

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1907 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PARNELL Arthur James Ringwood 2b 694

On the face of it given your current address I'd perhaps target the Thornbury option, thinking of the Somerset coalfields (not to mention the wellknow Parnell aeroplane manufacturers at Yate, Bristol in the 1920s & 30s), which of couse doesn't match the Marriage. Again I await your further guidance please.

Hope this helps, J

Hello All, my first time on this website but been researching the family history for some years. I've reached back to some relatives living in Pentwynmawr, Abercarn, South Wales.
Alice Elizabeth Phillips (you can see where this is going now) married Arthur James Parnell, I don't know when, and were living at 27, Station Street in 1913.
Does anyone have any matching details on Alice please?

DREW, George (Nephew George DREW, born Stroud) (reply)

? would it be possible for the children of George & Susan/Susannah DREW of Littledean + an Alice born to this couple at Newnham in 1791 be the parents of your George....

Looking at the baptism records for this couple in Littledean - they had two John DREW's born - one in 1802 and 1805 - (can't see a burial in between for a John DREW)

Normally, the father's name would be passed on through the generation - and wonder whether one of these John's was called George by the family - as your Charles Alfred DREW, was known as Alfred, and have come across this before, where a child was baptised by one name, but known by another, or name incorrectly written down in the register.....

DREW/HOLMS Lydney (reply)

The parents of George in 1803 at Alvington : were James & Mary DREW....

The children of James & Mary DREW start at Alvington in 1791....

There are 3 baptisms of children of a * James & Mary DREW at Lydney - (which I think is Littledean) could be the same couple....

William DREW 2 Oct 1785 (2 family names of George DREW)
James DREW 16 Sept 1787
Thomas DREW 9 Aug 1789 *

----

The Church of Latter Day Saints have a marriage at Lydney - 7 October 1784, James DREW and Mary HOLMS - can't see this on FOD records. However, this is on Public Members Tree on Ancestry - and as regards James DREW's death on the 3 March 1838 at Alvington - this is quoted....

'James died of old age, at about 6 o'clock in the morning, the death certificate is very explict, Son, Somerset DREW, a Labourer of Aylburton was in attendance during his last illness. Maybe his wife Mary had gone before him'

Looking at this Public Members Tree, this will probably discount George DREW 1803 Alvington as your line - .....

George and his wife Elizabeth - (no record of marriage found) - had 3 children: John, 1827, George 1829, and William 1837 - and are on the 1841/1851/1861/1871 census Tidenham. George DREW died 30 October 1872 at Rosemary Lane, Tidenham, from Heart Disease and Dropsy.

-----
1851 Census, Glos. Tidenham

DREW

George - 50 - born Alvington
Elizabeth - 54 - born Tidenham
John - 24
William - 14

DREW (Non-Conformists) (reply)

Thank you for all this. I've been checking both the FOD records and the Gloucestershire archive today and can tie in some of the above. The thing that still worries me though, is whether I've got the right birth record for George Drew (b.1803). I'm hampered by lack of local knowledge.

Why would a couple who lived in Littledean choose to have their child baptised in Alvington? Surely there was a nonconformist church closer to Littledean in 1803? Do you have any local knowledge?

So I'm still not convinced this is my George, even though I can't find another one that fits.

James MORGAN and Sarah (BETHEL?) MORGAN Ruardean (reply)

We have certainly gained a lot of conflicting information. M P Griffiths found a different James Morgan & Sarah, with a son Richard in 1871,which indicates that a second James Morgan & Sarah existed, now Kathy is nominating different parents for Sarah Bethel, details of which can be found in the Parish Records :

Year: 1827

My only real interest here is that James Morgan & Sarah Bethel's son William Henry Morgan 1856 married Evangeline Amanda Roberts 1867 in 1888. Evangeline Amanda Morgan nee Roberts emigrated to USA with Lewis (Louis) Marfell 1866. Interestingly one of William Henry Morgan's 8 siblings Mary Jane Morgan 1873 married Timothy Roberts 1876 in 1895, Timothy being a sibling of Evangeline Amanda Morgan nee Roberts.

Most interesting of all is that when Evangeline Amanda Morgan nee Roberts emigrated to USA in 1913 with Lewis (Louis) Marfell, she took only Evelyn Maude Morgan born 21 Aug 1902 with her, one of the 12 children she had with William Henry Morgan many of whom were a similar age to or younger than Evelyn Maude. Was she Lewis (Louis) Marfell's daughter ? No record has been found for a second marriage for Evangeline Amanda nee Roberts.

The US Census records are also revealing regarding Evelyn Maude Morgan :
In the 1930 census Louis and Evangeline are living in LaSalle in the home of Talcott Barnes(who was born in Wisconsin). Louis is a gardener and Evangeline is a cook for the family. In 1920 they are also living in LaSalle. They state that they both arrived in America in 1913. No children are living with them in either year.

Evelyn does appear on the 1920 U.S. census for LaSalle, Ilinois, but she is listed as Evelyn Marfell 16, a servant in the household of Howard Doan, Jr. Louis and Evangeline Marfell are listed in that census as residing at Deer Park in LaSalle County.

DREW, George b. Little Dean 1803 (reply)

Thanks m p griffiths.
I hadn't spotted the nonconfornmist baptisms of the later children. Thanks for that.

Could you find anything for George Drew the father, 1803?

According to the census returns George Drew and Mary Cross' children were:
Mary Anna Drew, 1828
George Drew, 1831
Lucy Sarah Drew, 1835
Henry Drew, 1837
Elizabeth Drew, 1840
William Cross Drew, 1842
Thomas Drew 1847
John Drew 1850
Charles Alfred Drew (known as Alfred), 1852 (My gggrandfather)

Of course census dates can be + or - 1 year depending on the date of birth and the date of the census

I can't find a baptism record for George the son (1837) but Mary Anna, Lucy and Henry were all baptised in Little Dean - presumably at the parish church.
source film number: 91530. I haven't found Elizabeth or William's baptosm yet, but - yes - Thoms and John were baptised at the WEesleyan church in Coleford - six miles there and six miles back again through the forest. They must have been pretty determined nonconformists by that time.

And then by 1852, Charles Alfred is baptised at the independent church in Little Dean. Do we know what date that opened for business?

I need some local knowledge to figure out this one. All help gratefully received.

I'm trying to find a baptism record for George Drew. He was born in (approx.) 1803 in Little Dean according to all the census records from 1851 - 1871. Can anyone help please?

I've found this one, but he seems to have been baptised at Alvington not Little Dean. Is that likely? I know there was a parish church at Little Dean when George's children were baptised, ut how about in 1803? Was there a parish church at Little Dean then or was it built after the Napoleonic wars in the rash of church-building that took place?

I have Henry and Thos in the US and marrying women from Pennsylvania

I have Emanuel with his wife Ann & his 3 Sons in the U.S. Emanuel had several other children born in West Virginia as did his sons that were born in West Dean. There certainly seems to be a preference for the name "Emanuel" as just about every one had a son with that name. This Emanuel & Ann had two. One died and they had another son a year later and name him Emanuel.

I cannot, however, find any passenger/ship records of when they came to the US. I did find one for a Thos Aston in 1855 but unless he came by himself, that isn't him

Descendents of Richard Aston 1745 (reply)

I'm researching Aston descendent's that have moved to the United States.

I believe my line is
Richard 1745 - Susanna Evans 1750
Son of Richard: Emanuel 1787 - Elizabeth Rudge 1874
Son of Emanuel: Henry 1832 (who moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then Mason County West Virginia)

I also believe Henry's two brothers Emanuel 1822 & Thomas 1834 also moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then Mason County West Virginia.

Other than lots of coincidences, I have no "proof" that my Henry Aston is from this family. From what I've found, there is no mention of these brothers after the 1851 UK Census. Does anyone have any further information? Also, in this Census the family is woodcutters, but the Aston's that moved to the US are miners.

Also, is this Richard of 1745 the same one that was sent to Sidney as a convict in 1800? I find it hard to believe as it appears he has a lot of wealth as reflected in his will.

Yes, the Skipps or Skyppes were prominent in Ledbury - see Ledbury A Medieval Borough by Joe Hillaby. Should be available on an inter-library loan or from Ledbury library. Photos of portraits John Skyppe 1574-1619 and John Skyppe, Bishop of Hereford 1539-1552, a Norfolk man. John Skyppe of Upper Hall died 1812. Ledbury Church also worth a visit.

Henry (Harry) Edwards born 1859 in Lydney Glos (reply)

I only know that Margaret (Esther) was blind but was still single and working as a charwoman in 1871. I cannot find her after this date and think she possibly passed away but have been unable to find any details. If you would like to contact me on email I will give you the information I have obtained. I have only had one real previous cousin contact with the Edwards family much to my disappointment. My grandmother was Cora Edwards and she sadly passed away with breast cancer when my father was young.
Best wishes
Carol

William HERBERT 1758-1824 & Martha JONES? (reply)

Me again! Just a thought...

JONES William & Martha possible baptisms:
431569 1746 JONES Martha Robert Mary Monmouth
418991 1755 JONES William Robert Mary Monmouth
419245 1759 JONES Robert Robert Mary sweep chimney Monmouth

Does anyone think that it's worth persuing my next theory? The above might possibly be brothers and a sister who were born in Monmouth and moved to Ruardean with William JONES marrying Susannah HERBERT on 15 Jul 1770 and Martha JONES becoming William HERBERT's second wife in 1796?

Second thoughts - Martha would probably be too old to have had all her children, so I think I have to discount this.

Nevertheless all ideas gratefully received!

William HERBERT 1758-1824 & Martha (reply)

Martha Herbert abt 1774-1846 who died in Ruardean is probably the one (aged 65 ish) on the 1841 census in Ruardean Hill and is recorded on that census as being born in Gloucestershire (not Monmouthshire)

If she is also the Martha Jones who married William Herbert in Llantillio in 1796 then:
She could have married in Monmouthshire but was born in Gloucestershire?
She could have been born in Monmouthshire but this did not get noted for the 1841 census?

As William and Martha Herbert of Ruardean don't baptise any children in Ruardean until 8 years after 1796 - do we know if there any additional Herbert baptisms near Llantillio to a William and Martha between 1796 and 1804?

BALLARD (SKIPP of Dymock - Inquest) (reply)

Thanks for t his information. I do have some of it though the info on John Ballard buried at Gloucester is new and interesting. When John left The Grange at Dymock the newspaper notes that he was leaving for a distant part of the country. Could this have been Gloucester I wonder?

Thomas Ballard, his brother James and hios brother Richard all worked as Paper Stainers in London.

Thank you again for taking the time to look on my behalf.

The Skipp side is especially interesting - they seem to have been prominent in Ledbury.

Hyett before 1635 (reply)

Actually the primary subject matter of my musings (about Welsh names, as variously pronounced and spelled by people whose native language wasn't Welsh, or even Celtic) is largely covered in this article, found elsewhere on this site:

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/downloads/Stories_Articles/Life_in_Hewelsfield_and_Brockw...

That does contain a fairly debatable assertion that Hewelsfield derives from "High wold," rather than "Hywel" (although Powell is from "ap Hywel"). Anyway, it's a very interesting article.
