HYATT and COX surnames - Just a theory (reply)

If this is the baptism of your 3rd great-grandfather, you will notice that their is no name listed for his father so it is probable that his mothers name is Elizabeth HUATT and that his fathers surname was COX. (John being born out of wedlock)

Do not be concerned about the different variations of the spelling of the surname as this was common in those days. Also, don't take it as gospel that his fathers name was John HYATT as noted on marriage of John and Hannah as often a fathers name was given just for convenience.

Hyatt surname to Hyatt Cox, can anyone help

while researching our family history we find that our great great great grandfarther on parish records was named john hyatt however on some censors record he is named cox. Was this common this a common practise of changing surnames as we find that there are lot of hyatt and cox on the records.

John Hyatt born in The Hayes near viney hill 1822 and he married Hannah Charles who born in 1824. Both married in 1950. The only way i can link the cox to the surname is that a john cox and elizeberth cox lived at the hays around the same time as John Hyatt. The Hayes was a small holding below the Hayes Wood at Vinney Hill.

In the 1841 he names himsef as John Hyatt and in the 1861 censors he is called John Hyatt Cox. Can anyone share any liget on this please.

Or if you are related please contact me
Regards

Edward Price and Sarah Hopkins (reply)

Hello Trev

Thomas and Sarah Hopkins are my great great grandparents. John Hopkins was my great grandfather's brother - my ggf was William, who emigrated here in 1860.

I will send you some material off line, but I have nothing on Edward Price I am afraid. You may be able to find something by searching the Parish Records on this site.

Just a word to the wise - it is not a good idea to post your email address on this forum - perhaps the admin can remove it for you. It is easy enough for a subscriber to the site to send you an email without you posting your address. You can try it by clicking on the envelope icon beside my name jhopkins.

Cheers (from a very shaky Canterbury in NZ)

William MEEK 1881 Cinderford (reply)

Brian

Have you tried under the name Phelps ? Who Caroline married, he may have been the father, but her own father would have given the details to the Census enumerator in 1881 and he would have used the name Meek.

Missing birth records (reply)

I have never been able to find the birth registration/baptism of x Great Grandfather's Grandson Reginald WICKENDEN born c1897 - age 4 on the 1901 census - Blakeney - who was also illegitimate. In this case, there is a birth in Kent, but this is not the correct one. Another x Great Aunt (or may be the same daughter) from the family, went to Swindon, Wiltshire to her brothers, to give birth to her illegitimate Son who was then adopted straight away- and his birth is registered and I have his birth certificate - Thomas Edgar WICKENDEN, 1900 - in this case the father's name is listed.

John SYNER burial Brockweir 1863 (reply)

I am researching the family history of an elderly friend and have got back to her great great grandfater who is Captain John Syner b.1814 St Brides, the very same gentleman whose burial place seems so elusive. My friend remembers that she was told as a child that one of her ancestors was buried on the island of Flat Holme in the Bristol Channel. Maybe this could be the answer to the mystery? I have been in touch with the Flat Holme Society and indeed burials had taken place there but all of the remains have been taken to the mainland to be researched. I am continuing various channels and if I have any further information I shall post it on the site
